The founding philosophy of The Couva Hospital and Multi-Training Facility (CHMF) for Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacology and Optometry is to make the most advanced medical services available to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The CHMF is geared to be a full-service adult care facility with state-of-the-art clinical services complimented by teaching facilities for medical specialists. There is a three-storey bed tower containing 80 beds dedicated to pediatrics and women and a second three-storey bed tower containing 150 beds dedicated to adult patients.
Located just off the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, the facility is easily accessible to patients across the country and equipped with modern, high-end medical equipment to ensure the most progressive medical treatment is made available.
Among the departments and services offered by The Couva Hospital are Diagnostic & Imaging, Surgery, Burn & Plastics Programme, Critical Care, an Adult Outpatient Clinic, a Pharmacy and Laboratory, and a Helipad to provide helicopter access for emergency patients.
The training aspect of the facility will be focused on Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacology and Optometry which will be located in an adjacent training centre building, which is connected by a covered pathway.
The facility is environmentally accommodating and takes advantage of the site’s natural topography, views and existing tree lines. It is also self-sufficient, with a single Central Utility Plant and Tertiary Level Waste Water Treatment Plant to ensure reliability. External features also includes 620 parking spaces, roads and landscaping.
The CHMF is being operationalised by the North Central Regional Health Authority in partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI) in the first phase, which includes the provision of advanced diagnostic imaging and pharmacy services.
